Karen J. do Amaral is a professor and researcher in the Department of Hydraulics and Sanitation at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). She holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, with a focus on Water Resources, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ) and Universität Stuttgart, and a Master’s in Civil Engineering, also in Water Resources, from COPPE/UFRJ.
Throughout her academic career, she has served as a professor at the Universität Stuttgart, at the Institut für Siedlungswasserbau, Wassergüte und Abfallwirtschaft (ISWA), where she coordinated and participated in several projects related to wastewater treatment, low-cost technological alternatives for reducing organic load in landfills, and autonomous wastewater treatment stations. She also taught at Positivo University, delivering undergraduate and graduate courses in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Management.
Karen has actively contributed to strengthening international academic cooperation, facilitating partnerships between institutions such as Technische Hochschule Rosenheim and UFPR, as well as coordinating exchange programs and dual degree agreements between Brazil and Germany. She has significant experience in organizing scientific events, including international symposia such as the MAUI Symposium, and leading university extension projects focused on implementing environmental courses in higher education institutions.
