Lourdinha Florencio


Civil Engineer (UFPE), Master’s in Hydraulics and Sanitation (EESC-USP), Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University (Netherlands), with specializations in Sanitary Engineering (UFC), Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment (IHE/DELFT-Netherlands), and Environmental Management (IMC-Japan). She is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UFPE and a CNPq Researcher. In 2010, she was admitted to the National Order of Scientific Merit (Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation) as a Commander. She is a full member of the Pernambuco Academy of Engineering (APEENG) and the Pernambuco Academy of Sciences (APC).

Internationally, she has served as a visiting professor and participated in cooperation projects at institutions such as Imperial College London, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, University of Arizona, University of Bochum, Xian Jiaotong University, UNAM, and Delft University of Technology.

She coordinated the Environmental Area at FACEPE, the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering at UFPE, and the PIBIC/CNPq, PIBITI/CNPq, and PIBIC-EM/UFPE/CNPq programs. She also led national research networks, including the Basic Sanitation Research Network (PROSAB – FINEP) and the Nutrient Removal from Sewage Network - RENUTRES (FINEP).

With over 300 published works in journals, conferences, and books, she has supervised more than 200 students in scientific initiation, master's, doctoral, and post-doctoral projects. She has participated in numerous public contest boards and academic defenses in Brazil and internationally (Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands).

As a consultant, she contributed to environmental assessments for major projects such as the Port of Suape, Recife International Airport, Atlântico Sul Shipyard, thermoelectric plants, landfills, and hydroelectric plants. In 2022, she was featured in Memória da Engenharia em Pernambuco by Crea-PE, and in 2024, she received the Outstanding Professionals award from CREA (Recife City Council).
